As previously announced in May, NJIT is moving to a new learning management system (LMS) called Canvas that will be replacing Moodle. This transition will take place over the course of the next academic year.

Instructors teaching during the Fall 2019 semester now have access to their courses in Canvas.

You can access Canvas directly at http://njit.instructure.com. To access help resources, please visit canvas.njit.edu.

Windows 7 support to end, users must migrate to Windows 10

Service Update - Tue, 05/28/2019 - 12:30

Microsoft is ending all support for Windows 7 in January 2020. This means technical support and security and software updates that help protect Windows 7 PCs will no longer be available. This will leave these computers, their data, and the networks they are connected to at significant risk for malicious attacks.

It is important that all Windows 7 PCs are upgraded to a modern operating system, such as Windows 10, which will provide the latest security updates.

If you are using an NJIT-owned Windows 7 computer, you will need to migrate to Windows 10 before January 2020.

The Office of Digital Learning and Technology Support (DLTS) is migrating NJIT-owned computers to Windows 10 on a first-come first-serve basis. You can submit a request for a Windows 10 upgrade via the IST Service Desk. Once your request is submitted, an IT Consultant will reach out to you within three days to discuss the next steps, including scheduling.

DLTS will be reaching out to users as appropriate to schedule migrations prior to January 2020.

If you are currently using a personally-owned Windows 7 computer, DLTS strongly recommends you migrate to Windows 10 before January 2020. NJIT students and faculty are entitled to one license of Windows 10 Education, available for download from IST Software. Please refer to Microsoft’s Windows 10 support materials for assistance during or after installation.

For more information about new features of Windows 10, visit https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/features

Banner 8 INB Retirement Announcement

Service Update - Mon, 05/20/2019 - 09:40

As you all know, the upgrade to Banner 9 Administrative Pages has been underway for more than a year. The final stage of transitioning to Banner 9 is about to begin. The Administrative Pages interface is comparable to Internet Native Banner (INB) forms.

Banner 8 INB has been unsupported by Ellucian since December 31, 2018. There are no new regulatory updates or solution enhancements being made to Banner 8 INB. In addition, Ellucian will not be issuing security updates leaving the Banner 8 vulnerable to exploits; continued use of the software would be cited by auditors.

NJIT has maintained access to Banner INB since that time as a grace period to allow users to adapt to the new Banner 9 Administrative Pages. The administration has decided the grace period phase will end on May 31st, 2019. At that time, the link to Banner 8 INB will be removed from Highlander Pipeline (my.njit.edu).

Please use the Banner 9 Administrative Pages for performing online data entry into the Banner database. A hyperlink to Banner 9 Administrative Pages is available in the Banner Administrative Services box of the Faculty/Staff Services page in Highlander Pipeline.

For your convenience, some instructions on using Banner 9 Administrative Pages are available:

If you experience difficulty using Banner 9 Administrative Pages please report them to the IST Service Desk at 973-596-2900 or https://servicedesk.njit.edu

Announcing Canvas: A New Learning Management System for NJIT

Service Update - Tue, 05/14/2019 - 13:44

We are pleased to announce that NJIT has adopted Canvas as our new Learning Management System (LMS). Canvas is a market leader that provides an intuitive and responsive LMS; it is also the LMS used by the majority of R1 institutions. Before making the decision to adopt Canvas, an evaluation was conducted in the fall and spring semesters with feedback solicited from faculty and students. Based on the results of the evaluation and with endorsement from the Teaching, Learning, and Technology committee and Faculty Senate, NJIT will be migrating from Moodle to Canvas throughout the next academic year.

Why Canvas?

  • 56% of R1 institution use Canvas (4% use Moodle).
  • 80% of NJIT pilot instructors had a positive experience with Canvas.
  • 71% of NJIT pilot students would recommend Canvas as an LMS.

While this transition will begin in the Fall 2019 semester, instructors who are interested in using Moodle may continue to do so for the next academic year. The Office of Digital Learning will move Moodle course content over to Canvas upon request. The transition timeline is as follows:

  • Summer 2019: Moodle remains the primary LMS.
  • Fall 2019 – Summer 2020: Canvas becomes the primary LMS. Instructors who wish to use Moodle will be able to do so upon request.
  • Fall 2020: NJIT retires Moodle and Canvas is used for all courses. Moodle content will be archived and available upon request.

For additional questions and for logging into Canvas we have a website with more information and an FAQ page: canvas.njit.edu. Instructors are able to log into Canvas right now to view tutorials and access a practice course to try Canvas’ features and get familiar with the look and feel. We anticipate that all instructors and students will have access to Canvas for the Fall 2019 semester by June 7th.

The Institute for Teaching Excellence will be hosting a full-day ITE Workshop on Wednesday, May 22 that will focus heavily on using Canvas. Please RSVP using the reservation form. Assistance is also available at the Office of Digital Learning, located in Central King Building room G15.

Thank you for your patience as we improve NJIT’s digital learning services. If you have any questions or any feedback, please contact the IST Service Desk or email us at canvas@njit.edu.
