Duo Compatible Devices
A Step by Step Guide on How to Register your Devices
It is highly recommended to register at least two devices. If you have at least two devices available, you'll always be able to use Duo, even if your default device is unavailable. You can watch the video found below for visual steps on an introduction to Duo interface.
Step 1: Choose which device(s) to register with Duo and have them available
We found in most cases, people will use a smartphone. The primary reason is when accessing protected services such as Banner, Webmail, etc, many login methods are possible with a smartphone or tablet after you install the free Duo Mobile app from Duo security.
- Duo Mobile's Push feature: Receive a notification on your device and tap Approve.
- Generate a passcode: Enter digits into the Duo passcode field and click Login (these are great because they work even if your phone doesn't have an Internet connection!).
- Pre-generate passcodes for emergencies: You can use the app to pre-generate passcodes you can use later as a backup way to log in if your device is unavailable.
- Receive a phone call from Duo: Answer and press any key to login.
- Receive passcodes via SMS (text message): Enter digits into the Duo passcode field and click Login.
Step 2: Register additional device(s)
For all types of phones and tablets:
- Visit any web service that uses Duo, log on using your UCID and password.
- Click the Add a new device.
- Verify your identity using one of the selections.
- You can then register additional devices.
For Hardware Tokens:
- To obtain a Duo hardware token put a request in via IST Service Desk.
It's that easy — You're enrolled!
When Duo goes into effect for your account, you'll start seeing prompts to confirm your identity with your device when accessing protected services.
Step 3: Register a backup device (recommended)
- We recommend registering at least two devices so that you have a backup method in case your main device is unavailable.
- The registration instructions are the same as above, with one exception: After your first device has been registered, you'll be required to complete the Duo prompt to change your Duo settings.
- Don't have a second device? If you're using the Duo Mobile app, it has a built-in backup! You can write down passcodes and use them later, even if your device doesn't have service or isn't available.
Duo has many different authentication methods, as well as multiple types of compatible devices, to further create an array of options for more accessible authentication. You may use one or more devices to enroll into your duo account. It is highly recommended to register at least two devices. See the list below for more information on device compatibility.
Smartphones and Tablets
Smartphones are by far the most popular type of device to register with Duo because they're the easiest to use during login and offer the best user experience. A variety of methods are possible with a smartphone or tablet after you install the Duo Mobile app from your respective app store
Duo Mobile's Push feature: Receive a notification on your device and tap Approve.
Generate a passcode: Enter digits into the Duo passcode field and click Log In (these are great because they work even if your phone doesn't have an Internet connection!).
Pre-generate passcodes for emergencies: You can use the app to pre-generate passcodes you can use later as a backup way to login if your device is unavailable.
Receive a phone call from Duo: Answer and press 1 to log in.
Receive passcodes via SMS (text message): Enter digits into the Duo passcode field and click Log In.
Non-smart Cell Phones
Your mobile phone doesn't have to be smart to help you stay secure with Duo. You can also register non-smart cell phones and use these login methods:
Receive passcodes via SMS (text message): Enter digits into the Duo passcode field and click Log In.
Receive a phone call from Duo: Answer and press any button to log in.
Desk Phones
Register your NJIT desk phone as a backup device in case you forget your mobile at home, or register it as your default device if you don't have a mobile. You can also register your home desk phone if you ever work from home. To use a desk phone, you'll just answer a phone call from Duo and press any button to log in.
Hardware Tokens
Hardware tokens are recommended for users who have no other devices to register with Duo. These tokens are small fobs about the size of a stick of gum. They generate passcodes the same way the Duo Mobile app does. To use a token, you'll press a small button on the token and wait for the passcode to appear. This can sometimes take a few moments. When your passcode is ready, enter the digits into Duo's passcode field and click Log In. For more information about tokens, including how to get one from IST, please contact the IST Service Desk.
Can I or do I have to register a computer?
No, computers like laptops and PCs can't be registered with Duo.
