Online Course Exam Proctoring
NJIT policy requires that all midterm and final exams must be proctored, regardless of delivery mode, in order to increase academic integrity. Note that this does not apply to essay or authentic based assessments. Effective beginning Fall semester 2019, students registered for a fully online course section (e.g., online or Hyflex mode) must be given the option to take their exam in a completely online format, with appropriate proctoring.
Where possible, the Provost’s office and the Office of Digital Learning encourages faculty to use authentic assessment (e.g., projects, presentations, case studies, etc). When that is not an option, faculty are recommended to use solutions that do not require a live proctor—these include two services: Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor and ProctorU’s Record+. Because there were unexpected expenses, NJIT is covering the costs of these services*. In accordance with the policy above, the following proctoring solutions are available to use for online course exams:
- Respondus
- LockDown Browser
- LockDown Browser + Monitor
- LockDown Browser + Live Proctoring
- ProctorU
Each of these solutions requires a strong internet connection and a computer with a microphone and webcam.
Instructors may implement the Online Exams and Proctoring Course Syllabus Language, based on which proctoring solution is being used in their course(s).
Any course that uses online proctoring for exams may require you to do an environmental scan. You are responsible for selecting a location where you are comfortable with yourself and your room being video and audio recorded. You may be asked to use your camera to scan all four walls of the room you are in, as well as the workspace, desk, and area around the computer. Ideally, your exam environment should be well-lit and free from distractions and interruptions.
* An exception would be ProctorU Live+ exams that are not scheduled at least 72 hours in advance.
If you do not have a webcam, strong internet connection, or have trouble accessing needed equipment, please contact the Dean of Students office.
