Why Data Governance Matters

NJIT’s Data Governance program supports the responsible and effective use of institutional data to strengthen decision-making, operations, student success, research, and the university’s broader mission. 

Effective data governance helps NJIT:

• support trusted, consistent, and high-quality data;
• promote responsible and appropriate use of data;
• protect data and support privacy, security, and compliance obligations;
• improve access to reliable information for decision-making;
• strengthen data literacy and shared understanding; and
• enable effective use of data, analytics, and evolving technologies.

NJIT’s Approach to Data Governance

NJIT takes a collaborative approach to data governance, bringing together business, technical, and institutional expertise to help ensure data is understood, managed, protected, shared, and used appropriately.

The Data Governance Subcommittee (DGS), Data Change Advisory Board (D-CAB), and Data Stewardship Forum (DSF) provide complementary governing bodies for governing institutional data, reviewing shared data changes, and supporting stewardship across the university. Data stewards contribute subject-matter expertise and help connect the people who understand the meaning and use of data with the practices needed to manage it effectively.

NJIT Data Governance Framework

The framework brings together the key capabilities needed to govern institutional data effectively—from accountability and shared understanding to data quality, appropriate use, protection, lifecycle management, and data literacy.

It serves as a reference point for strengthening data practices across the university and helps NJIT evolve its governance program as institutional needs, technologies, and uses of data change.

NJIT uses the Data Cookbook as its central business glossary and metadata repository. It brings together approved institutional definitions and related information to help the NJIT community understand and use data consistently. Learn more below.
