NJIT Computer Requirement & Specifications
Important Notice
Students can take advantage of the NJIT Vendor Partnerships to purchase a suitable device for their academic needs. Before making a purchase, it is strongly advised that students review the estimated shipping date to ensure timely arrival. Alternatively, opting for an in-stock model may help avoid delays.
Each student is individually responsible for bringing a computer that meets or surpasses the technical requirements specified for their particular program. Ensuring that your device aligns with these requirements is crucial for a seamless learning experience.
In the event that you are unable to secure a personal device before the semester begins, you will have access to on-campus computing resources. These include Library workstations, computing labs, and a self-service laptop kiosk conveniently located in the Central Avenue building. These resources are available to support your coursework.
*For those opting to purchase a computer outside of NJIT Vendor Partnerships, it is strongly recommended to invest in a four-year warranty that includes accidental damage protection. This can be arranged directly through the laptop manufacturer or vendor, providing added protection against unexpected issues and extending the lifespan of your device.*

Hillier College of Architecture and Design Computing Requirement
All Freshmen in the School of Architecture and Sophomores in the School of Art + Design, as well as all graduate and transfer students in both Schools in the Hillier College, will need to have a computer to complete their work in the design studio and other classes. To meet this need, there are three options to choose from below. *All questions about the HCAD computer requirement can be e-mailed to hcad-computerrequirement@njit.edu.*
Option 1: Purchase the HCAD Workstation model and a monitor from the NJIT Vendor Partnership Portal* and keep them in the Design Studio. Studio access is available 24 hours per day and students are assigned a personal desk with lockable storage. This full-service option provides complete hardware support and an array of College distributed and supported software for the entire duration of your studies. Click here to access the Partnership Portal.

Option 2: Bring any stationary desktop computer and monitor of your choice that materially meets the specifications of Option 1 to keep in the Design Studio.
Option 3: Bring any portable laptop computer of your choice that materially meets the specifications of Option 1. This provides maximum flexibility to work anywhere.
Students who elect to choose their own computing platforms described in "Option 2" and "Option 3" are responsible for purchasing, installing, and maintaining all software on any device besides the specific "Option 1" workstation platform available through the portal in the link above. They are also responsible for all hardware maintenance and repairs and for keeping any companion devices in working order by applying operating system and software updates.
Additionally, all Hillier College students who don't choose Option 3 as their primary computer will need to have a portable companion device that can be used to take notes in classes outside the studio. This is typically a lightweight tablet or laptop.
Instead of a lightweight companion device, some students may want to use a portable laptop to do studio design work alongside their studio workstation/desktop. In that case, students should select a laptop capable of producing and manipulating substantive and meaningful digital models in the several design software programs that are listed here:
Autodesk (Revit, Maya, AutoCAD, 3DS Max, Fusion 360) https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/system-requirements
Dassault (Solidworks) https://www.solidworks.com/support/system-requirements
Adobe (Creative Cloud) https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/system-requirements.html
McNeel (Rhinoceros, Grasshopper) https://www.rhino3d.com/7/system-requirements/
Students who select Options 2, 3 or to design on a companion laptop can download student-owned software from the following locations:
Autodesk https://www.autodesk.com/education/students
Dassault https://www.solidworks.com/product/students
Adobe https://www.adobe.com/creativecloud/buy/students.html
