NJIT Computer Requirement & Specifications
Things to Know
- Students can use NJIT Vendor Partnerships for suitable academic devices.
- Review shipping dates or choose in-stock models for quicker delivery.
- Students are responsible for bringing a computer that meets or surpasses the technical requirements for their particular program.
- Should you not have your personal computer ready at the start of the semester, please know that NJIT offers on-campus computing resources to support your studies. You'll find workstations available in the Library and our computing labs, along with a convenient self-service laptop kiosk located in the Central Avenue building.
- For those opting to purchase a computer outside of NJIT Vendor Partnerships, it is strongly recommended to invest in a four-year warranty that includes accidental damage protection. This can be arranged directly through the laptop manufacturer or vendor, providing added protection against unexpected issues and extending the lifespan of your device.
- Please note some software will require the use of the NJIT computer labs to complete coursework or a student must utilize Windows Virtualization through a 3rd party provider at an additional cost.
- NJIT has pre-installed software (Matlab, MS Project etc.) on our Virtual Windows environment that can be found in our Canvas Software Downloads page(login required).

Hillier College of Architecture and Design Computing Requirement
HCAD
All incoming students in the Hillier College of Architecture and Design are required to have a computer that meets specific performance standards essential for success in design studios and related coursework.
This requirement applies to the following student cohorts:
- School of Architecture: All first-year undergraduates and all undergraduate transfer students
- School of Art + Design: All second-year undergraduates, graduate students, and transfer students
To support this requirement, HCAD has partnered with hardware vendors to offer discounted workstation packages through the NJIT Vendor Partnership Portal. Students are strongly encouraged to purchase one of the specified HCAD Workstation models along with at least one monitor that has the following features:
- No smaller than 24 inches
- 4k resolution minimum
- DisplayPort connectivity to connect to the workstation.
In this full-service scenario, students will store their workstations at their assigned studio desks, which provide 24-hour access and lockable storage, and the workstation will be supported by technical support staff within the computing infrastructure of the campus. This setup ensures compatibility and consistency with college-distributed software, and includes comprehensive hardware support throughout your academic tenure.

Companion Computing Devices
In addition to the primary design-capable workstation, all HCAD students are advised to have a portable companion device, such as a lightweight tablet or laptop, for use in classes outside the studio. This device should be suitable for tasks like note-taking and presentations. Students are cautioned that while some companion laptops are design-capable, most are not able to handle substantial digital modeling tasks. Companion device suggestions are available in the Lenovo portal.
Important Note: Your companion device is not intended as a workstation replacement.
