Undergraduate Computer Requirement

NJIT is a computing intensive university. Access to a personal computer is essential for the successful completion of an NJIT degree program. Some Colleges or programs have specific requirements:

Hillier College of Architecture and Design

  • All Programs: Freshman and transfer students are required to purchase a specific desktop model in accordance with their program and keep it in the Design Studio. Studio access is available 24 hours per day and students are assigned a personal desk with lockable storage. The fall 2019 model will be available for purchase in June 2019.
    • Architecture: Purchase before entering their first year
    • Art + Design: Purchase before entering their second year

Newark College of Engineering

  • Chemical Engineering: freshman are required to purchase a specific laptop model for use in and outside of the classroom. The fall 2019 model will be available for purchase in late June.
  • All other Programs: Starting in fall 2020, all freshmen and transfer students will be required to purchase a laptop meeting or exceeding minimum specifications.

Ying Wu College of Computing

  • All Programs: Starting in fall 2020, all freshmen and transfer students will be required to purchase a laptop meeting or exceeding minimum specifications.

All other Colleges and programs

  • All other freshmen and transfer students are required to have access to a computer in their place of residence.

Vendor Partnerships

Students purchasing a computer through our vendor partnerships are entitled to robust hardware support provided through the Office of Digital Learning and Technology Support. Certified technicians can diagnose and repair OEM hardware issues at no additional cost so long as the warranty is current and active.

Software Bundle

All NJIT students are provided access to a software bundle including frequently-used Microsoft products, virus protection, programming, design, and other tools. This bundle is provided at no additional cost.
