The Andrew File System (AFS) is a distributed file system comprised of multiple file and database servers and several hundred MacOS, Linux, Unix, and Windows client computers. NJIT's AFS implementation is branded Highlander AFS.
Off-campus access requires an active VPN connection and an SSH connection to the servers listed below. NJIT recommends MobaXterm, available for download from IST Software, but any modern SSH client will work just fine. MacOS users can use the ssh command from the Terminal app.

AFS-hosted Personal Websites
All AFS users can create a personal website which is hosted at http://web.njit.edu/~YOURUCID.
Media files cannot be served from http://web.njit.edu/. Instead, paths to hosted media files must be referenced as http://harp.njit.edu/~YOURUCID/PATH_TO_MEDIA_FILE in your HTML code.
AFS Backups
Online backups, or snapshots, of a user's home directory (~) occur daily between 10 PM and 12 AM. Snapshots do not count against a user's AFS disk quota. Files created and deleted before a snapshot is taken are not recoverable.
Snapshots are stored in the user's home directory under BACKUP-AFS.ACCOUNT and are read-only; nothing in them can be modified. However, the owner of the snapshot can read and copy any file to another location.
