Virtual Private Networking
Virtual Private Networking

Virtual Private Networking (VPN) allows you to connect to the NJIT network from off-campus using the Internet Service Provider (ISP) of your choice. Certain network services at NJIT can only be accessed from a computer on the NJIT network.VPN creates a "virtual" network connection to NJIT, allowing your home computer the same access as a computer located on-campus. Although you are off campus, it appears that you are connecting from the campus. This allows you to securely access NJIT network resources when using your ISP, staying at a hotel, or working from another location.

NOTE: Certain ISPs prohibit the use of VPN or have restrictions on its use. Please contact your ISP for information on using VPN with your Internet service before you proceed.

Services That Require You to USE the VPN Application when off-campus

  • Software Downloads
  • Logging into the ALPHA system
  • Filehost
  • NJIT News servers and Discussion Group
  • Accessing ADM e-mail using Outlook (different from Web Outlook)

How to Set up and Use the VPN Service for 32-bit Operating Systems:

  1. Download - Download the correct client for you computer from the IST software website.
  2. Install - Follow the appropriate installation instructions to install the VPN client onto your computer and configure it for use with NJIT.
  3. Run - Installing and Configuring the VPN Client alone will not connect you to the NJIT network. You MUST be sure to RUN the VPN Client application in order to have access to the NJIT network.

Browser Based VPN

To access the VPN through a browser, please visit the Web VPN (Clientless SSL VPN) page.

How to Set up and Use the VPN Service for 64-bit Operating Systems:

If you are using a 64-bit XP or Vista operating system, you are required to use a browser based VPN service to connect to the network. To access this VPN service, visit http://vpn64.njit.edu/, log-in with your UCID and UCID password, and follow the on-screen instructions.

If you are unsure of whether you use a 32-bit or 64-bit Windows operating system, you can check by following the instructions listed here.
