Notification of Potentially Compromised NJIT Accounts

Last month it was revealed that Tumblr experienced a 2013 data breach that compromised 65 million users’ email address and Tumblr passwords.  Linkedin also recently announced a 2012 incident that impacted an estimated 117 million accounts.

996 NJIT email accounts were listed in a large set of compromised credentials found online associated with those breaches. Although these breaches did not involve NJIT systems, we have notified the users on that list because many individuals use the same password across multiple accounts.

Users that have changed their NJIT password at some point after the breach are at a lesser risk. It is always a good idea to check all of your accounts (NJIT, Tumblr, Linkedin) for unusual or suspect activity and change your passwords regularly. NJIT passwords can be changed at http://mypassword.njit.edu

If you should have any doubt about the authenticity of any email sent from NJIT, please contact the NJIT IST Help Desk directly at 973-596-2900 (Monday - Friday 8 AM - 6 PM) or via http://help.njit.edu.
