VirusScan 9.8 Installation Instructions

The University uses a licensed copy of McAfee VirusScan for student personal computers and University-owned computers. Some programs conflict with McAfee VirusScan. If your computer has other anti-virus software installed, you must uninstall the programs before installing McAfee VirusScan. 

Step 1: Remove old anti-virus software from your Mac

  • For clients with McAfee for Mac installed:

1. Open a Terminal window from the Utilities folder and enter the following command: 

sudo /usr/local/McAfee/uninstall EPM

2. Enter your account password when prompted.

  • For clients with other anti-virus software installed:

1. Drag the application's icon into the Trash from the Applications folder.
2. Empty the Trash.

Step 2: Download VirusScan to your desktop.

Step 3: Install McAfee 9.8 on your Mac.

1. Find VSM980-RTW-1791.pkg. (It should be in your Downloads folder.)

2. Double-click VSM980-RTW-1791.pkg.  If asked if you want to run the program, click Continue.

3. Click Continue to start installation process.

4. Click Continue.

5. Click Continue.

6. Read and Agree to the license.

7. Click Install.

8. Click Continue.

9. Click Close.

Step 4: Manually scan your Mac for viruses.

1. From your Applications folder, open McAfee Security.
2. In the left-hand column, click Scan Now.

3. Click Start Scan in the upper-right corner of the screen.
4. You will see a progression bar as the scan runs. When the scan is complete, the application will indicate if any viruses were detected and what action was taken (usually cleaned or deleted unless you have changed the preference settings).
