Personal Webpages on AFS
These webpages are stored on Highlander AFS. Web.njit.edu is the web server for AFS. All Highlander AFS users can create a website on AFS. Your webpage will have a URL in the form: http://web.njit.edu/~yourUCID.
Note: If you don't have your personal URL automatically created run the following command from any public-access AFS Linux client:
home.page.setup ( /usr/ucs/bin/home.page.setup )
Java programs, PHP, JSP, and MySQL are currently supported. Students can also run CGI scripts from their AFS account. MySQL is a multi-user, multithreaded SQL (Structured Query Language) database server. For more information on MySQL at NJIT, including how to obtain an account, please visit MySQL page. CGI scripts are programs that are run on a web server in response to input from a browser. For more information on CGI scripts at NJIT, please visit http://web.njit.edu/info/cgi-bin.html.

Getting Access
To Access Highlander AFS, you need an AFS account. This account is automatically created when you request your UCID. To find out if you have an AFS account, please visit http://web.njit.edu/~yourUCID. This website should have a basic template web page that can be replaced by your content after you edit it. If you can’t access this website, please contact the IST Service Desk (servicedesk.njit.edu).
Creating Your Homepage
For step-by-step, printable instructions on creating your home page, please click the"Step by step instructions for beginners for creating a basic Web Page at NJIT.pdf .
Accessing Your Homepage
There are two methods to access your homepage directory:
- SSH Secure Shell
- Log into your AFS account using your SSH Secure File Transfer client.
- Host Name: afsx.njit.edu (replace x with 1-36).
- Username: your UCID.
- Password: your AFS password.
- Once you have logged into your AFS account, double-click the folder "public_html"
- After opening the folder, locate the index.html file. This file represents your homepage. You may edit this page with any webpage editor, providing you DO NOT change the filename.
- Log into your AFS account using your SSH Secure File Transfer client.
- OpenAFS
- OpenAFS creates a directory in "My Computer" that gives you direct access to your AFS Drive. In computing labs on campus, this drive is commonly referred to as your "H-drive." Your "H-drive" drive will contain the folder "public_html." In this folder, locate the index.html file. This file represents your homepage. You may edit this page with any webpage editor, providing you DO NOT change the filename.
Important Note: A security feature implemented in January 2007 on web.njit.edu as well as other webservers that serve pages from AFS user accounts may have affected your personal website. Only websites lacking an "index.html" file would be affected. These websites are stored under your AFS account's "public_html" directory. Please see this document for more information.
Information On Hosting Audio and Video Files
Audio or video files in AFS user accounts can be served from one webserver only: harp.njit.edu. The URL used to access your web-pages that contain audio or video files served from harp.njit.edu is: http://harp.njit.edu/~<ucid>/ (insert your UCID after the ~). Policy information is available here.
Faculty wishing to distribute large files may do so by using an sFTP server. Click here for more information about sFTP and SSH.
Quota Increase for Student Webpages
All requests for an increase in quota for student web pages must come from a faculty or staff member, via mail to arcs@njit.edu. That mail must contain the following information :
- UCID of student requesting the increase
- Size of the increase
- Justification for the increase
