Configuring NJIT VPN for Scientific Linux 6

Note: These instructions are for Scientific Linux 6 only. They have not been tested on versions older or newer than 6.

The vpnc.x86_64 and NetworkManager-vpnc.x86_64 packages must be installed on your computer.

To check if this is the case, run: rpm -qa | grep vpnc

If they are not installed, run: yum install NetworkManager-vpnc vpnc.x86_64 to install them.

To configure the VPN, click the Network Manager Icon    located on the upper right-hand corner of your screen.

Select VPN Connections > Configure VPN

In the open dialog box Network Connections, click Add

Then select Cisco Compatible VPN (vpnc) as the Connection Type and then Create...

Enter the following in the fields to follow:

Connection name: NJIT VPN


Group name: admin (if you are staff/faculty) or acad (if you are a student).

User password: Select Always Ask in the right drop-down box.

Group password: Select Saved on the right drop-down box, then enter admin (if you are staff/faculty) or acad (if you are a student).

User name: type your UCID in this field.

Domain: Leave empty

Click Apply, then Close to exit the Network Connections dialog.

You should now be able to see the newly created NJIT VPN connection: click the Network Manager Icon    and go to VPN Connections 

Select NJIT VPN, then enter your UCID password and you will be ready to use your VPN connection to access the campus network.
