1: What is SSH and sFTP and how are they used at NJIT?

Secure Shell or SSH is a network protocol that allows data to be exchanged over a secure channel between two computers. Encryption provides confidentiality and integrity of data. SSH uses public-key cryptography to authenticate the remote computer and allow the remote computer to authenticate the user. SSH is typically used to log into a remote machine and execute commands.

NJIT's AFS machines support SSH connections, and because of the protocol's security features, SSH is the preferred method to access NJIT's AFS machines. SSH supports file transfers using sFTP.

SFTP is a network protocol that provides file transfer and manipulation functionality using the SSH-2 protocol. It provides secure file transfer, and is the preferred alternative to standard FTP.

NJIT provides SSH Secure Shell Client for Windows for easy access to our servers.
