We are pleased to announce that NJIT is in the process of transitioning its alumni e-mail service to a new and enhanced infrastructure. Beginning at approximately 12:01 am on Monday, April 6, your NJIT alumni e-mail service will be moved to this new email storage and access system which is being hosted by Google. This site gives specific information about the launch of the new service.
Your "@njitalumni.org" (or "@njit.edu") e-mail address and password will remain the same. The new service, Webmail by Google, is based on Gmail, Google's popular web-based e-mail program and will provide enhanced security and services for all NJIT users along with an increase in user storage up to 7 GB. The transition should be seamless and any existing e-mail you currently have stored in your account will be transferred to the new infrastructure. Alumni forwarding e-mail to a third party account will have to reset their forwarding details at the new Webmail by Google mailbox (see below).
Student accounts were transferred to the same infrastructure in August 2008.
Why is this happening?
Mailhost, the existing infrastructure that has hosted NJIT's student and alumni service is aging and has reached end-of-life. Google offers an attractive service for higher education faculty, staff, students and alumni that allows existing users to retain their current e-mail addresses.
What happens at 12:01 AM on Monday, April 6?
At 12:01 am on Monday, April 6, a series of technical steps will occur to transition Alumni email to Google. The following list explains the changes that will occur:
- New mail sent to your @njitalumni.org (or @njit.edu) email address will be delivered to your Webmail by Google mailbox. No new mail will be delivered to your mailbox on the Mailhost infrastructure. Any existing mail in your mailbox will remain on the Mailhost infrastructure until it is migrated to Google (see below).
- NJIT's existing webmail reader https://webmail.njit.edu will now read at your new Webmail by Google account.
- Your first login to Webmail by Google requires an account validation step. This is a self-explanatory step similar to what you have likely experienced with other online services. In the future, alumni will be asked to validate their mailboxes annually. More detailed information on the annual validation process will be provided in a future communication.
- Following a successful account validation you should find yourself at your Webmail by Google email INBOX.
- Be sure to "Sign out" when done using your Webmail by Google account.
- Your NJIT UCID and password will only work at the https://webmail.njit.edu entry point to Webmail by Google. In order to use an external mail client (e.g. Outlook) you will have to create an additional Google password for your account. See http://ist.njit.edu/support/google/popimap.php for information.
- If you currently have forwarding in place for your NJIT alumni email account, i.e. your mail is automatically forwarded to personal account elsewhere (e.g. AOL, Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, your cable provider, etc.) the forwarding must be reset. Visit: http://ist.njit.edu/support/google/webmailforwarding.php and see how to configure your Webmail by Google account to reset your forwarding.
- If you wish to read any of your old mail on the Mailhost infrastructure, you may do so at: https://oldwebmail.njit.edu until it has been migrated to Google.
What about my existing old email on Mailhost?
- As of 12:01 am on Monday, April 6, no new mail will be delivered to your @njitalumni.org (or @njit.edu) email address on Mailhost. However, you may read existing mail by visiting https://oldwebmail.njit.edu.
- Beginning April 6, the contents of existing Mailhost mailboxes will be migrated to your Webmail by Google mailbox. It will take approximately two weeks to migrate all existing Mailhost mailboxes.
- We do not recommend SENDing new mail or REPLYing to old mail from https://oldwebmail.njit.edu during this time period.
- In migrating Mailhost mail to your new mailbox hosted by Google, Mailhost folders will be translated to Google labels. Please visit Google's Label Management page for further information.
- You will receive an email at your new Webmail by Google mailbox when the migration of your Mailhost mailbox has been completed.
- When the entire migration of Mailhost mailboxes to Google has been completed, mailboxes will be removed from the Mailhost system.
Although I am an alumnus, I still had an OAK mailbox. What happens to that mailbox?
Alumni with mailboxes on OAK will also be migrated to Webmail by Google. The contents of the OAK mailbox will be converted to the label "OAK" in the Webmail by Google application.
