Staying Safe and Secure

Staying safe and secure while accessing the Internet and network resources ensures that you can conduct your work unhampered.  With hundreds of new viruses, worms, and security risks found monthly, it is important that you take the necessary steps to protect your computer and your personal information. 

Virus Protection

Make sure your computer has proper virus protection software.  NJIT licenses virus protection software for your office computer AND your home computer.  While the anti-virus software might be installed, it is critical that the virus protection software is kept up-to-date to help protect against the newest viruses.  (more info)

Operating System (OS) Updates

Keeping your computer's operating system up-to-date with the latest security patches is the first line of defense in keeping your computer safe from security risks. (more info)

Password Security

Passwords are your personal key to accessing resources of all types.  These guidelines will help you choose a secure password.  (more info)

Spyware, Adware, and Malware

Ever wonder why your computer randomly has a pop-up advertisement appear?  Or why you are automatically taken to a web page you didn't click on?  Your computer may have malicious software taking control of it which is a security risk for your personal information and the university's network.  Learn how to protect against and remove these types of programs.  (more info)

Controlling Spam

Nothing hinders e-mail communication more than unwanted messages or spam.  Filters are in place to help weed out such messages before they reach your inbox. (more info)

No Phishing Allowed

Reputable organizations will never ask for your personal or confidential information via email.  You should be very suspicious of any e-mail messages which refer to websites that request this information. (more info)

Security Certificates
