Retiring Legacy Email Accounts

Before transitioning to Webmail by Google, NJIT supported dozens of separate email domains. Over time these systems were replaced but never officially retired. Consequently, it is not uncommon for NJIT employees to have multiple email addresses. Security and efficiency were the driving factors, as we were increasingly vulnerable with thousands of accounts on dated systems.

To make this transition easier we have made the following provisions:

  • February 1, 2015 - January 31, 2016 - During the first year, mail sent to the retired addresses will be forwarded to your official @njit account. In addition to forwarding, the email the sender will receive notification that your email address has changed.
  • February 1, 2016 - January 31, 2017 - For the second year mail will not be forwarded but the sender will be notified of your new address.
  • February 1, 2017 and Beyond - After two years mail sent to these retired systems will be undeliverable.

The following are the email domains that are being retired:

  • @ADM
  • @Admin
  • @Admin1
  • @Alpha
  • @Alpha1
  • @Homer (including @CIS, @CS, @IS and @IT)
  • @M
  • @Mailhost
  • @Oak.

Mailing lists that belonged to these systems and were used for group communication were provisioned with Google Groups.

If you have any questions about the accounts being retired, or would like help using Google groups, please call the IST Helpdesk at 973-596-2900 or http://help.njit.edu.
