Office Network Connections

Each office on-campus is provided with a high speed connection to the NJIT network and Internet. NJIT supports the use of Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS, and Linux for personal computing.  However, certain precautions must be taken with your office computer in order to use the NJIT network. In order to safely and securely use your computer, it must be configured properly. An improper configuration can result in having your computer blocked/removed from the network.

These guides are here to help promote a safe and secure computing environment. It is your responsibility to make sure all of the steps are followed for your specific workstation operating system.

Configuring Your Computer for Central Management

Central management will provide your computer a designated home in the NJIT Network community. Once part of the community, your computer will be safer and more secure against viruses and other forms of security breaches. Operating system updates will automatically be installed, keeping your computer up to date. Any vulnerabilities found in your computer will be patched to prevent unauthorized access and attacks against your valuable data. Please contact the IST Service Desk if you are still using Windows 2000 or XP. Microsoft no longer supports 2000 or XP nor do they provide updates for them. Upgrade to Windows 7. Some touch-enabled PCs may be upgraded to Windows 10.

Installing and Maintaining Virus Protection Software

The threat of PC virus infection is now greater than ever. The need to protect your PC has become vital as there are now over 100,000 known computer viruses with more than 300 new viruses being created each month. Virus protection software must be maintained to protect your computer against new viruses, worms, trojans, and other invasions. Out-of-date virus protection software is ineffective. Virus protection software must be maintained on a weekly, if not daily basis. It is your responsibility to protect your computer against virus attacks.

Maintaining Operating System Updates and Patches

With new security holes and system vulnerabilities being discovered each day, your computer must be updated and patched as soon as "fixes" become available. Although your computer is configured for central management, updates and patches may not get installed if your computer is turned off, suffers a network outage, or other unforeseen event. Maintaining your operating system yourself will guarantee that your computer is up to date and protected against known security threats.
