NJIT Legacy Phone System
The university’s legacy telephone system (PBX) is being retired and replaced with a new Cisco IP Phone. If you are still using the old Avaya phone, please use the information below for phone and voicemail systems.
Using the NJIT legacy phone system:
Legend for Tones: Please Read This First!

Tone | Description |
DIAL TONE | Dial Tones are the long steady sound you hear when you first put the phone to your ear. This means you are able to dial. |
RECALL DIAL TONE | Recall dial tones are three short beeps followed by the standard dial tone. This means the switchhook is depressed (the phone is not hung up), and you may dial out. |
CONFIRMATION TONE | Confirmation tones are three short tones without a standard dial tone after. This signifies that the action you have attempted was successful, and that you may proceed. |
SIREN TONE | Siren tones are tones that alternate between high and low pitches. This signifies a failed action or denied feature. |
FAST BUSY TONE | Fast busy tones are tones that consistently beep at a fast rate.This signifies that your call has been blocked and you must attempt later. |

Automatic Callback: For analog telephones only (to be called back when a busy extension becomes free) |
To activate | Listen for the DIAL TONE. Dial *5. After the DIAL TONE, dial the extension. Once you hear the CONFIRMATION TONE, hang up immediately. You will receive a call back. |
When you are called back | Listen for 3 short rings. Pick up the phone and place it to your ear. Listen for ringing and wait for the answer. | |
To cancel | Listen for the DIAL TONE. Dial #5. Wait for the CONFIRMATION TONE. You may then hang up. | |
Call Forwarding - All Calls (to have all of your incoming calls ring at another phone) |
To activate | Listen for the DIAL TONE. Dial *2. After the DIAL TONE, dial the extension. Once you hear the CONFIRMATION TONE, hang up immediately. Your calls will now be forwarded to the extension you entered. |
To cancel | Listen for the DIAL TONE. Dial #2. Wait for the CONFIRMATION TONE. You may then hang up. | |
Call Forwarding - Busy/Don't Answer (to provide backup coverage for your incoming calls) |
To activate | Listen for the DIAL TONE. Dial *3. After the DIAL TONE, dial the extension. Once you hear the CONFIRMATION TONE, hang up immediately. Your unanswered calls will now be forwarded to the extension you entered. |
To cancel | Listen for the DIAL TONE. Dial #2. Wait for the CONFIRMATION TONE. You may then hang up. | |
Call Hold: For analog telephones only (to put a call on hold) |
To hold a call | Depress the switchhook. After the RECALL DIAL TONE, dial *4. Wait for the DIAL TONE, then lay down the headset. Be sure you do not hang up the phone. |
To hold a call and consult with another party | Depress the switchhook. After the RECALL DIAL TONE, dial *4. Wait for the DIAL TONE, then dial the third party's number. You may then converse with the third party. | |
To alternate between held calls | Depress the switchhook. After the RECALL DIAL TONE, dial *4. You can immediately begin talking. This will place your current call on on hold and switch to the previously held call. | |
To return to held call | Hang up your phone. Your phone will then ring. Answer to resume held conversation. This will disconnect the party you were just speaking with. | |
Call Pick-Up (to answer a ringing phone in your "pick-up" group) |
To pick up from an idle phone | Listen for the DIAL TONE. Dial *7. You can immediately begin talking. |
To hold a call and pick up | Depress the switchhook. After the RECALL DIAL TONE, dial *4. Listen for the DIAL TONE. Dial *7. You can immediately begin talking. This places your current call on hold and puts the incoming call through to your line. | |
To alternate between held calls. | Depress the switchhook. After the RECALL DIAL TONE, dial *4. You can immediately begin talking. This will place your current call on hold and switch to the previously held call. | |

Call Waiting Signal - To Answer: For analog telephones only (to answer a 1, 2 or 3 beep call waiting signal) |
To pick up from an idle phone | Hang up your phone. Your phone will then ring. Answer to begin the new call. This will disconnect the party you were just speaking with. |
To hold a call and answer | Depress the switchhook. After the RECALL DIAL TONE, dial *4. Listen for the DIAL TONE. Dial *9. You can immediately begin talking. This places your current call on hold and puts the incoming call through to your line. | |
To alternate between held calls | Depress the switchhook. After the RECALL DIAL TONE, dial *4. You can immediately begin talking. This will place your current call on hold and switch to the previously held call. | |

Call Waiting Signal - To send 3 beeps (to send and urgent signal to a busy extension) |
To send a three-beep call waiting signal to any extension | Listen for the DIAL TONE. Dial *1. After the DIAL TONE, dial the extension. Once you hear a special audible ring, your alert has been sent. You must then wait for an answer. |
Threeway Conversation: For analog telephones only (to add a third party to an existing call) |
To add a third party | Depress the switchhook. After the RECALL DIAL TONE, dial the third party. Once the party answers, or if there is no reply, depress the switchhook again. You and your third party will now be connected to the original call. |
To drop a third party | To drop any member from the threeway call, that member must hang up his/her phone. The remaining two parties can then resume conversation. | |
To transfer a call to a third party | Depress the switchhook. After the RECALL DIAL TONE, dial the third party. Once the party answers, announce the call. You may then hang up. This essentially creates a threeway conversation, then drops your connection to the call. |
Using Audix - NJIT Voice Mail System
To log-in:
- Dial x8455 from a campus phone. Dial 973-596-8455 from an off-campus phone.
- Enter your 4-digit extension followed by the # sign.
- Enter your password followed by the # sign (The default password for a new mailbox is "135").
To record your name:
- Press 1 to record your name.
- Record your name.
- Press 1 to stop recording.
- Press 1 and # to save, or press 1 twice to re-record your name.
Change your password:
You will be required to CHANGE your password to a 5 digit pin.
- Press 5.
- Press 4 and listen to the voice prompt.
- Enter a 5 to 15 digit number followed by the # key.
- Re-enter the 5-15 digit number followed by the # key to confirm.
You will now be notified about how many new messages you have in your voice mailbox. At this point you can:
• Press 1 to Record and Send Messages
• Press 2 to Get and Reply to Messages
• Press 3 to Create or Change Personal GreetingsPressing *R (*7) at any point while in the Audix system will return you to the main menu.
#1 Record and Send Messages to another extension
Recording Messages:
• Press 1 to stop or pause your recording. Press 1 again to continue recording.
• Press 2, 3 to rewind and playback your message.
• Press *D to delete or re-record your message.
• Press # to approve.Sending Messages:
• Enter the person's 4-digit extension.
• Press # (Repeat this step for each extension).
• Press # to approve.
• Press # to send your message.
• Press 3 to listen to a message header (Time, Date, Length, Caller).
• Press # to skip to the next message header.
• Press 0 to listen to the message.
- Press 1 to reply or forward the message.
- Press 2 to rewind the message.
- Press 3 to pause/play the message.
- Press 4 to increase the volume.
- Press 5 to back up a few seconds.
- Press 6 to move forward a few seconds.
- Press 7 to decrease the volume.
- Press 8 to slow down the message.
- Press 9 to speed up the message.
- Press # to skip the message.
- Press *D to delete the message.
#3 Create or Change Personal Greetings
• Press 0 to listen to a greeting.
• Press 1 to create, change, or delete a greeting.
- Press (1-9) to select a greeting location. Press 1 to record a new greeting.
~ Press 1 to stop or pause your recording. Press 1 again to continue recording.
~ Press 2, 3 to rewind and playback your recording.
~ Press *D to delete or re-record your greeting.
~ Press # to save your recording as a greeting.
• Press 2 to listen to all greetings.
• Press 3 to activate a greeting.
• Press 4 to administer greetings based on call type.
- Press 1 to distinguish between internal and external calls.
- Press 2 to distinguish between busy and no answer calls.
- Press 3 to distinguish between work-time and out-of hours calls.
- Press 4 to remove distinction between work-time and out-of hour calls.
- Press 5 to use same greeting for all calls.
• Press # to finish.
