Office 2007 and Legacy File Formats

As NJIT undergoes the transition to Office 2007, many users will still be using earlier versions of Office. In order to ensure compatibility with those users, it is good practice to save your work in the previous format.

How to change the default file save format in Office 2007

  1. Under Word 2007, click on the Office Button in the top left of the window.
  2. Click on the Word Options button at the bottom right of the menu.
  3. Select Save from the panel on the left.
  4. Open the drop down menu labeled Save files in this format.
  5. Choose Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc) from the list.
Follow the same procedure for Excel 2007 and PowerPoint 2007.

For Access 2007, the steps are slightly different:

  1. Click on the Office Button in the top left of the window.
  2. Click on the Access Options button at the bottom right of the menu.
  3. Select Popular from the panel on the left.
  4. Open the drop down menu labeled Default file format under the Creating Databases heading.
  5. Select your desired save format (Access 2000 or Access 2002-2003).
All of these changes can be reversed at any time by following these steps again and selecting the Office 2007 file formats.
