1: How do I create an account on Highlander AFS?
If you are a current NJIT student and already have a UCID, it is likely that you already have an AFS account. If you have no UCID and therefore no AFS account, you must fill out an online Account Application.
If you have a UCID and have tried to sign onto your AFS account without success, either you have a password issue or you do not have an AFS account. If you are not sure, contact the Computing Helpdesk for assistance.

2: What username and password do I use?
Highlander AFS requires your UCID as the username, but it maintains a separate password from the other computing accounts. If you do not know what your Highlander AFS password is, you must have your password reset.

4: Can student clubs and organizations create a Highlander AFS account?

6: How do I log into Highlander AFS?
- Run an SSH session using secure shell software. NJIT has SSH software available at our software webpage.
- The "host" or "domain" should be "afsx.njit.edu" where x is a number between 1-36.
- Enter your username.
- Enter your password.

7: How do I automatically have my OAK e-mail forwarded?
- Log into Highlander AFS.
- Type "forward.mail" at the prompt.
- Type "y" and press ENTER.
- Type the email address you wish to have your mail forwarded to and press ENTER.
- Verify the address; type "y" and press ENTER.

9: How do I change my Highlander AFS password?
- Log into Highlander AFS. For information about logging into the AFS, please see question 6.
- Type "passwd" at the prompt.
- Enter your old password.
- Enter your new password.
- Enter your new password again.

11: How do I retrieve files that were deleted by mistake??
A "snapshot", or digital memorization, of your AFS folder is taken around 1am daily. You can only retrieve files from the latest "snapshot."
- Log into Highlander AFS. For information about logging into the AFS, please see question 6.
- Type "get.backup" at the prompt.
- Follow the instructions.

12: What are "Permission Denied" errors?
"Permission denied" messages are often due to the user not having the "Kerberos token" needed to authenticate the user to the system; users normally acquire a token on login. Token expiration time is 25 hours.
To acquire a new token type "klog" at the prompt and press ENTER.
Enter your password.
When you return to the normal prompt, you will have acquired a new token.

13: What are "Command not found" errors?
Command not found error usually occurs when .cshrc and .login files have been deleted.
To fix this follow these steps:
- Log into Highlander AFS.
- Type " /usr/local/bin/dotfiles" at the prompt.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
- Choose option 10) ALL.

15: How do I send attachments using PINE to a recipient using Outlook or Outlook Express?
When sending an attachment using PINE, a recipient who is using a Microsoft mail client might not be able to see or open the attachment correctly. To prevent this problem, please follow the steps listed below.
- Start Pine.
- Choose SETUP from the Main Menu.
- Select (C) Config.
- Type w.
- At the "Word to find:" prompt, type "quell-content-id" and press enter.
- Type x to select the option.
- Type e to exit.
- Type y to Commit Changes.

17: What do I do when I get an "Integrated Login Failed" error message?
This error is generated by the OpenAFS Client when your AFS Password and Windows Login Password are different.To avoid this message, set your AFS Password the same as Windows Password.

This OpenAFS Client maps your H: drive (home directory) to the lab computer that you log into; enabling you to store your files directly on your AFS file space. AFS Client provides you 125 MB of free disk space to store your files. You can access this disk from any of the Lab PCs on campus. H drive can be used as your local disk…Your own personal storage space on campus.

18: How do I use my "H-Drive" or AFS storage account?
Your AFS storage account (H-Drive on Windows computers) provides you with 125 MB of free disk space to store your files. You can access this disk from any of the Lab PCs or personal computer on campus, and any off campus computer with the help of SSH Secure Shell.

19: How can I make my website play multimedia files?
Your website located at web.njit.edu/~yourUCID is not capable of playing multimedia files hosted on your AFS drive. You must use harp.njit.edu/~yourUCID to veiw these files.
