October 14, 2016 - Important Information About Accessing WebMail by Google

As of October 18, 2016, the URL https://webmail.njit.edu will be replaced by http://webmail.njit.edu (please see below for a more technical explanation). If you experience any problems please make sure you are not using an older bookmark.

Authentication as well as the sending and receiving of mail will take place over secure HTTP.

This change will not result in any planned service interruptions.  If you have questions or concerns please contact the IST Service Desk at 973-596-2900 or http://servicedesk.njit.edu.

Technical Explanation: We are only moving away from HTTPS for the initial "Webmail by Google" landing URL.  When users go to http://webmail.njit.edu they are immediately redirected to our “Webauth Authentication Service” and then “mail.google.com” both of which will continue to support HTTPS.

As part of our business continuity efforts we are eliminating on-premise dependencies for select cloud-based services. Fewer on-premise dependencies allow us to more quickly fail-over to our disaster recovery site in case of a problem with our data center. Google provides support for this scenario with the caveat that only HTTP connections to webmail.njit.edu (webmail landing page) can be supported.

Since we're using SAML authentication for our “Webauth Authentication Service” the HTTP only solution for webmail.njit.edu does not present a security risk. When using SAML protocol, redirection authentication takes place at webauth.njit.edu over secure HTTP regardless of the protocol used to connect to webmail.njit.edu.
