Google+ at NJIT

Google+ is part of your Webmail by Google account. Google+ is a social media tool that introduces new ways for our community to connect and communicate with each other. This is an opt-in service and your Google+ account will not be enabled unless you choose to do so.

Joining Google+

The first thing to do is to join Google+ and create your Google+ Profile. Join now at Google+.

Highlights and Tips

  • Google+ Profiles: Create a profile with information about yourself. For example, you can add information about your classes, campus activities or groups, projects, and personal expertise. You can choose which information is visible to others inside or outside of NJIT. The only exception is your name, which is always publicly visible. Learn more about Google+ profiles here:

  • Hangouts: Connect and communicate with the students and faculty with video chat rooms called "hangouts." Hangouts provide screen sharing and integrate with Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides for collaborative editing. When you start or join your first hangout, you’ll be prompted to install the Google Voice and Video Chat plug-in for your web browser. You'll also need to connect a webcam and use a computer microphone. Learn more about Google hangouts here:

  • Picasa Web Albums: Because Google+ uses Picasa Web Albums for photo sharing, we've also enabled this service. When you share photos, they're stored in Picasa Web Albums, which you can access at

  • Circles: Share information with specific people by organizing your contacts into circles. For example, create circles for friends, classmates, courses, projects, or special-interest groups on campus. Learn more about circles here:

  • Streams: You receive posts from others in your stream. This is where you can find and engage with content that's shared with you. Learn more about streams here:

  • Mobile access: You can use Google+ on mobile devices, using either a native app or a mobile web browser. Learn more here:

Some important reminders

  • Because you're signing up for Google+ with your NJIT email address, NJIT retains the right to access your Google+ data and modify or delete it at any time.

  • If you are already using Google+ with your personal (non NJIT) email account, you might want to consider enabling your NJIT Google+ account specifically for course and campus related uses. This would prevent the sharing of your personal account information for NJIT specific activities.

  • Your Google+ information can be shared with the world and is subject to NJIT’s Responsible Use Policy on Cyber Resources. You are the owner of your Google+ data and NJIT is not held responsible for misuse and abuse of the product.

  • Google services are “location aware” and share information between Google applications. If you want to turn off location services for NJIT Google Apps please see the following links:

  • Google+ is not automatically enabled. You must opt into the service if you are interested in using it. If you are uncomfortable with Google+, you don’t have to do anything - an account won’t be created.
