Dial Out Instructions

Update: Starting on January 3, 2020, authorization codes will no longer be required when making domestic telephone calls from office telephones. Authorization codes will continue to be required when making international phone calls or when making calls from public areas such as hallway courtesy phones.

Dialing Patterns for Outgoing Calls

  • Emergency: Dial 911
  • Campus calls: Dial the 4-digit extension
  • 973 area code: Dial 9 + 1 + 973 + seven-digit phone number
  • Domestic long-distance: Dial 9 + 1 + ten-digit phone number
  • Toll-free calls: Dial 9 + 1 + the ten-digit phone number
  • International calls:  Dial 9 + 011 + the country code + city code + phone number

International Calls: Authorization codes are required when making international phone calls. Authorization codes will be assigned to faculty and staff who require international dialing.  Supervisors should contact the IST Service Desk to request authorization codes for employees.

Authorization Codes: After you dial a number, there will be a silent delay followed by two tones. Enter your 6-digit authorization code followed by a “#”. Calls will still complete if you do not enter the “#” after the authorization code, however, there will be a 10-second delay.

When making external calls via FAX machines, be sure to add the “#” after the authorization code.

Please contact the IST Service Desk at 973-596-2900 if you have any questions.
