Microsoft Windows Environment
Microsoft Windows Environment

All Windows PC's must be in a Microsoft Windows Domain to help promote a safe and secure computing environment.  There are a few exceptions made for research purposes and they are handled on a case-by-case basis.

Academic (for students)

Academic is the primary Microsoft Windows domain for students. If you use PCs in any of the public computing sites, you need to obtain an Academic Windows account to authenticate as an NJIT student. Your UCID will be the Academic Windows username. However, Academic Windows passwords are maintained separately from the UCID password. The Academic Windows environment provides access to a large library of Windows based software in the public computing sites.

Windows PCs in most of the public computing sites on campus are also AFS clients.  You may have direct access to your Highlander AFS files by entering your Highlander AFS password when using the AFS client.  This will give you direct "drag and drop" support for your AFS directory without using an FTP client. more info

Academic Windows supports roaming profiles.  A roaming profile is used to save your configuration preferences (desktop, favorites, mail settings), so you are provided with identical settings on any computer your log into.

An Academic Windows account was automatically created during the UCID creation process.

NJITDM (for faculty and staff)

NJITDM is the primary Microsoft Windows domain for faculty and staff. If you are going to use PCs on campus, you will need your NJITDM account to authenticate as a NJIT faculty/staff member.

When you sign up for an NJITDM account, you will also be given an ADM e-mail account. ADM is the primary faculty/staff e-mail system. ADM is a Microsoft Exchange based e-mail server. Most faculty/staff that use a PC as their primary computer workstation will use ADM for e-mail along with Microsoft Outlook as an e-mail client. ADM also has an easy to use Web access client for reading your e-mail when on the road. more info

Your UCID will be your NJITDM user name. However, NJITDM passwords are maintained separately from the UCID password. Your NJITDM password and your ADM password will be the same. These two accounts are linked together.

If you do not have an NJITDM account, please contact the Computing Helpdesk at 973-596-2900.

NJSOA (New Jersey School of Architecture)

The academic model of the New Jersey School of Architecture emphasizes peer contact and collaboration. Students are required to purchase a specific CAD capable workstation for use in their studio space. Their computer is then integrated into the NJSOA domain which provides:

  • An NJSOA student account used to assign and allocate computing resources reserved for NJSOA students
  • An operating system/software package containing industry standard CAD and graphics applications for their individual use paralleling what students can expect to encounter upon graduation
  • Ability to use a print facility that provides:
    • Black and white laser printing
    • Color laser and inkjet printers
    • Large format color plotters
    • Small and large format scanners
  • Access to semi-private network disk storage for studio groups, course groups or school wide collaboration
  • Exposure to industry standard computer related work methodologies, practices and skills such as project management, workflow and archiving from day one
  • Introduction to information presentation techniques through various forms of digital media such as web, video and DVD formats.

Additionally, NJSOA accounts provide Architecture Students with the following resources within the School of Architecture:

  • Access to higher end CAD, video and animation equipment via course specific teaching labs
  • Access to rapid prototyping equipment such as laser cutters, CNCs and starch printers via course specific teaching labs
  • Additional tools to participate in courses dealing with research initiatives such as Interactive Virtual Environment Modeling, Industrial Design Processes and Infrastructure Planning
  • Tool sets allowing participation in electives instructing the fundamentals of website design, digital portfolio technologies and digital video production
  • On-site support beginning with embedded technical personnel
